Several African traditions place great philosophical and spiritual importance on the color red, including the Yoruba of Nigeria, Benin, and Togo; and the Kongo of Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Congo, and Gabon. Whether with prosperity foods such as collard greens, cornbread, and black-eyed peas; or through communal foods such as crab boils or barbeque; food plays an important role in the celebration.
